Head to Toe: RockStar Style
Jean Pool
Jeans and rock 'n' roll have always gone together—from Elvis's cuffed trousers to Jimi's bellbottoms, and even Eminem's oversized dungarees. Right now, the skin-tight, tapered look is de rigueur for hot bands, and, according to Andrew Buckler of Buckler Jeans, it's all because of one man. "Peter Murphy of Bauhaus is the king of the rock style that bands like the Strokes and Franz Ferdinand have revived," says the designer, who has outfitted rockers including Snow Patrol and the Editors. "To make it work you need the skinniest, tightest pair of black jeans you can possibly imagine," he declares.
Pen Pals
Fashion is often the earliest, easiest way a budding rocker tries to express himself. Just think of Pretty in Pink's Duckie, or that tortured guy in high school whose book bag was covered in patches, pins and scrawls. Sometimes, however, clothing can't express enough, so some rockers, such as R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, Prince and, most recently, Chris Martin have all resorted to spelling it out literally on their bodies. You would have thought their music would be able to say enough.
