ELTON JOHN

The Weird And The Wonderful

When Elton John sang "She's got electric boots, a mohair suit" in his 1973 smash "Bennie and the Jets" he was tipping his hat to the outrageous styles of U.K. glam rockers like David Bowie and Gary Glitter. John has said he pictured Bennie, of the song's title, as a sci-fi rock goddess. Elton is no slouch himself when it comes to fabulous threads; by the mid-'70s he was known as much for his flamboyant dress—the ostrich feather body suits, the platform shoes, the wacky colors—as he was for his amazing songs.

Sunglasses At Night

From the beginning, Sir Elton has flaunted his outré eyewear. Says John: "I only needed specs for reading, but as a result of wearing them all the time to try to look like Buddy Holly, I became genuinely nearsighted." But John didn't stick with the nerdy look for long. Over the years, his collection of sunglasses has included jewel-encrusted light-ups, Old Glory frames, and a pair of oversize shades by Christian Dior, worn during his 1974 stage appearances.

Tailor Made

Departing from the glam rock trappings of the 1970s, Sir Elton, né Reginald Dwight, opted for a more tailored look for his 1984 Breaking Hearts tour, one that included bespoke suits from Galliano mentor and one-time Beatles haberdasher, Tommy Nutter.

Eastern Promise

Elton John has been a fan of designers Gianni Versace and his sister Donatella, as well as Savile Row tailor Richard James, since the early '90s. But when black tie is in order—as it was at the star's 14th annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar party—Sir Elton has recently been seen stepping out in Yohji Yamomoto.
