PUSSYCAT DOLLS

Burlesque Beginnings

In 1993 choreographer and future-Pussycat Dolls creator Robin Antin toyed with the idea of putting a contemporary twist to classic Las Vegas-style burlesque. Enlisting the help of her housemate, actress Christina Applegate, they invited girlfriends, many of whom danced regularly in music videos, to their garage-slash-dance-studio for experimental movement sessions. It wasn't long before the Pussycat Dolls—outfitted in risqué costumes—scored a regular Thursday night opening slot at Johnny Depp's Sunset Strip club, the Viper Room—a gig that lasted six years.

Kittens and Lambs

When it comes to fashion, Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton is an unabashed L.A.M.B. devotee. "I love everything Gwen [Stefani]," Says the 21 year-old singer/dancer, "She's very fashion-forward, she's always a step ahead." It's only fitting that the young Doll give props to Stefani—six years before Thornton joined the group, Stefani made a guest appearance with the Dolls, singing and dancing to the song "Big Spender." And it was Gwen who brought her Interscope bosses Jimmy Iovine and Ron Fair to see the band in its earlier incarnation, helping pave the way to an eventual record deal.

Don't Cha Wish Your Family Was Smart Like Mine?

As one of the hardest-working women in music, Pussycat Dolls founder Robin Antin has overseen the group's evolution from rag-tag L.A.-based burlesque troupe into worldwide, platinum-selling, R&B/Dance sensation. While pluck and perseverance play no small part in her success, it doesn't hurt to be sprung from a seriously creative gene pool—one that includes an artist father, Michael, and an interior designer mom, Brenda. Oh, and let's not forget brother Jonathan, celeb-salon owner and star of Bravo's "Blow Out."
